North Carolina teen and girlfriend facing severe drug charges

A 19-year-old man with a history of drug arrests is once again facing serious drug offenses in North Carolina. The youth and his 26-year-old girlfriend were arrested last Wednesday after a tip led police officers to a residence where the 19-year-old and his father allegedly attempted to dispose of evidence, according to police officers. The man's girlfriend was reportedly over eight months pregnant at the time of the arrests.

According to reports, the couple allegedly fled from the authorities and then tried multiple times to destroy evidence. Reports indicate that law enforcement agencies acted on information that the young man was making frequent trips to a known heroin distribution point in Charlotte. Police officials set up surveillance at his Salisbury residence and followed the 19-year-old and his pregnant girlfriend after they left the home.

Apparently, the two allegedly realized they were being followed and broke several traffic laws in an attempt to evade the police. The 19-year-old reportedly dumped a plastic bag and a powdery substance out of the passenger window. The police also reported that the two arrived at a residence in Enochville, North Carolina, where the young man reportedly threw a bag to his father who then entered the house and closed the door. The father admitted later that he flushed the bag containing the evidence down the toilet. A search allegedly revealed 12 grams of heroin stuffed into the pregnant girlfriend's crotch area, and the police found the drugs the accused had thrown out of the car window.

The man, who was out on bonds of more than $1,000,000, received charges including possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver MDMA, altering and destroying evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia, among others. The girlfriend received two counts of trafficking in heroin, heroin possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver, fleeing and possession of drug paraphernalia, among others.

The 19-year-old man appears to have a long history of severe drug charges, but the article did not state whether the girlfriend has had previous charges. When drug busts are this serious in nature, it takes a skilled criminal defense attorney who can objectively sort the facts from mere conjecture to determine the best course of defense. Looking at the events that took place during the arrests is a good place to start.
