North Carolina ambulance-car accident caused by a drunk driver

One of the nation's leading causes of personal injury or death is car accidents involving alcohol, especially during the summer months. As June is National Safety Month, it's a good time to think about improving driver safety, and a good way to do this is by not taking the wheel while impaired.

Getting hit by a drunk driver can cause a huge amount of hardship on families beyond the heartache of having a loved one injured or killed. Some of the things family members must deal with include medical bills, insurance agencies and legally seeking damages through an attorney. The person who causes a motor vehicle accident while driving impaired will also have to face life-changing consequences as the driver in the following news story is likely discovering.

On June 2 in Gastonia, five people suffered injuries when a drunk driver collided with an ambulance. Officials say the 36-year-old car driver left the road by swerving to the right, and then over-corrected, causing him to cross the centerline and collide with the oncoming emergency vehicle. Police say the driver will be charged with DWI and could also receive additional charges such as reckless driving.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol reports that four of the victims received serious, non-life threatening injuries and were taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center. The fifth victim reportedly received serious injuries and was transported to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment.

According to an emergency medical service captain, the Stanley Fire and Rescue ambulance containing two employees was responding to an emergency call when the accident occurred. Reports indicate the two technicians have already been released from the hospital. A little girl in the car broke her arm during the accident and the driver's wife suffered head injuries.
