Sleep may have played a role in grisly truck vs. motorcycle crash

On July 19, authorities in Guilford County, North Carolina, say that a tractor-trailer accident involving a group of motorcyclists caused the death of two people and injured four others. Investigators suspect that the driver of a semi-truck may have fallen asleep while driving before plowing into a group of six motorcyclists who were parked alongside of I-85.

Police say the six victims are all members of a motorcycle club that has affiliate chapters in Laurel, Maryland, and Richmond, Virginia. The six motorcyclists had stopped along the side of the highway to perform mechanical repairs on one of the member's bikes prior to the accident.

It was early on a Sunday morning when investigators say the tractor-trailer drifted out of the highway's middle lane before colliding with the group of assembled motorcyclists and their bikes. One of the victims died instantly in the crash and another victim succumbed to his injuries and died one day later.

First responders treated three of the victims at the scene of the accident before transporting another victim to the hospital. That victim is said to still be recovering from his injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured in the collision. In fact, investigators believe he was attempting to flee the scene of the accident until a flat tire on his truck thwarted his efforts. The driver appeared in court the following day where he was charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor death. Investigators do not believe the truck driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident.

There are a few things you should know if you have been injured while operating your motorcycle. North Carolina laws permit individuals to sue negligent truck drivers who are responsible for creating preventable accidents. Additionally, an employer who hires inadequately trained drivers or maintains a fleet of mechanically unsound vehicles may also incur some liability depending on the level of their involvement.

A North Carolina motorcycle accident attorney can review the facts of your case and determine whether the circumstances merit a lawsuit seeking compensation for your medical costs and lost wages. If successful, your attorney may be able to help you start getting your life back together like getting you a fair and just recovery for your injuries.
