Obtaining medical care after an accident

If the aftermath of a car accident, you may be in shock over what has happened and unsure of what you should do next. Your first priority is to obtain medical care. You should also do what you can to ensure that others injured in the same accident receive assistance.

Even if you do not feel seriously injured, it is important to see a doctor and make sure you are all right. While no one wants to overuse medical services, the forces involved in a car accident can cause serious injuries that are not apparent at first.

Here are examples of reasons why you might not feel the pain of an injury until later:

  • Your body produces adrenaline in response to the accident, which can give you a burst of energy and block pain
  • Injuries to soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments and disks may not be apparent until the tissues swell days after the accident.
  • If your head is thrown violently forward and back, you could suffer an injury to your brain. Symptoms such as headache, memory problems and difficulty concentrating may be persistent.
  • Hairline fractures to vertebra or other bones may not be immediately apparent.

If you don't seek treatment for injuries, minor problems can become serious and lead to ongoing medical issues. Furthermore, if you wait until days or weeks after the accident before seeking medical treatment, the insurance company of the at-fault driver is likely to claim that your injuries are not accident related-or are not serious.

It's also important to continue medical treatment until you get better. If you discontinue treatment because you don't feel any improvement, the insurance company is likely to claim that you are no longer injured.
