5 dead, 3 injured in horrific 3-vehicle accident

The chief of the Fayetteville Police Department was interviewed by CBS North Carolina after a devastating multi-vehicle collision last month that killed five and injured three more. He said, "The damage is devastating. This is the worst crash that I've ever seen."

The accident occurred on June 29 around 8 p.m. and involved two cars that were racing one another down Cliffdale Road where it intersects with Lynhurst Drive. Both cars collided with a third vehicle as it exited the parking lot of an apartment complex in Fayetteville.

Witnesses claim the cars were speeding as fast as 70 mph through the residential area. The deceased appeared to be in their teens and early 20s, although two of the dead were so badly injured that they were "unrecognizable," according to police.

First responders transported four victims to the hospital; one was said to be in grave condition. The following morning, the fifth victim succumbed to injuries from the crash, and three others were still hospitalized.

In such a violent collision, it can sometimes be difficult to ascertain who were driving the vehicles and who were riding as passengers. However, police investigators will meticulously comb over the scene, gathering evidence, interviewing survivors and eyewitnesses, to get the clearest picture of the circumstances surrounding the horrific accident.

Eventually, the injured parties and the survivors of the deceased will be able to determine where the liability for the tragic wreck lies. They may choose to file a claim for damages with the insurance company of the at-fault drivers in order to receive compensation for their losses and damages. The North Carolina civil court system is another venue they may use in their pursuit of justice.
