Woman arrested for July wreck that killed 2

A 20-year-old Franklin woman who was involved in a double fatality accident earlier this summer has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of death by vehicle and driving left of center.

The accident happened on July 18 in Jackson County, North Carolina. The young woman was heading south on Highway 23 when, according to North Carolina state troopers, for unknown reasons she crossed over the yellow line dividing the north- and southbound lanes.

The driver collided head-on with a mother and daughter from Spartanburg, ages 85 and 63. Both women succumbed to the injuries they suffered in the wreck. The young woman was also injured and had to be taken via helicopter to Mission Hospital, according to media reports.

After her arrest, she was booked at the Jackson County Jail. However, a judge set a bond and she was later released. It is unknown when her next court appearance will be. There is no indication that impairment was a factor in the crash at this time.

When someone dies in an accident that was caused by another person's negligent driving behaviors, it is human nature for the survivors of the deceased to want them brought to justice. When criminal charges follow the accident, that is one type of justice that can be pursued.

However, if there are no criminal charges forthcoming after a collision, that doesn't mean that there are no other paths to justice. Injured parties and the survivors of those who were killed can still seek civil justice by filing a personal injury and/or wrongful death claim in the North Carolina civil courts.
