Tips for sharing the road with motorcycles

If you are like many motorists, you may find yourself feeling a little uneasy each year when the temperatures warm and the motorcycles start appearing on North Carolina roadways. Feeling nervous while driving around motorcycles is quite common due to their small size, which can make them harder to spot, but sharing the road with motorcycles is a reality you probably cannot avoid.

There are, however, steps you can take to enhance your confidence and minimize any anxiety you feel when you see a bike approach. Follow these tips to keep both yourself and motorcyclists safe on the street.

Keeping an eye on the elements

You may not like driving your car in the rain due to decreased visibility and slippery streets, but keep in mind that motorcyclists also experience these hazards, and they have less protection between them and the road. Therefore, it is wise to take even more care when driving near motorcyclists during periods of inclement weather. Slow down, keep ample space between you and respect the fact that the motorcyclist, too, is likely struggling.

Stay four seconds behind

To make sure you are maintaining a safe distance when traveling behind a motorcycle, choose something on the side of the road, such as a sign, and make note of when the bike passes it. You should not then pass the same sign for at least four seconds. If you do, you are too close; slow down and give the biker some space.

Check your blind spots

As the name suggests, “blind spots” refer to the areas around your car you cannot easily see while seated at the wheel. Because motorcycles are so much smaller than typical vehicles, they are more likely to end up in your blind spots, so take extra care to check these spots before changing lanes or otherwise moving your car.

Learning to safely share the road with motorcycles is critical to avoid accidents. If you suffered injury because of the actions of someone else on the roadway, you may want to speak with a lawyer.
