3 common driving mistakes that can cause an accident

You will rarely see an accident coming until the moment before impact or the sound of crunching metal. According to the Highway Safety Research Center, upwards of 250,000 accidents occur in North Carolina in a given year. Even the safest of drivers is likely to have experienced an accident at some point, and the shock of the unexpected situation is often as traumatic as any other part of the event. There are some common driving mistakes that can easily cause an accident, so if you want to stay safer, avoid the following.

Not using your turn signals

Too many drivers underestimate the importance of using their turn signals. Failure to do so, however, can easily create an unsafe driving environment. Even though you may not be at fault, if you do not signal, another driver may not anticipate you merging, slowing down or stopping. They may be unable to react in a timely manner and an accident could result.

Not double-checking before merging

Another dangerous maneuver is merging or changing lanes without first double-checking the safety of doing so. Your rearview mirrors have blind spots, so looking over your shoulder is essential to ensure you do not cause a collision. Simply checking twice can prevent a potential accident.

Driving at an unsafe speed

Everybody knows that driving in excess of the speed limit is dangerous. However, you may not know that driving considerably under the speed limit can be dangerous, too. Both of these behaviors create a situation where other drivers may have to quickly react to you. If you are going too fast, you may not be able to brake quickly enough to avoid a collision, and if you are going too slowly, other drivers may not be able to brake quickly enough to avoid you.

Though you may carefully take all these precautions on the road, you cannot guarantee other drivers will as well. After an accident, you might have questions about your legal options. Contact an attorney to discuss your case further.
