How to share the road with commercial vehicles

It seems like every time you turn around, you hear about some unfortunate individuals who have lost their lives in truck accidents in North Carolina. Not all commercial vehicle accidents end with fatalities. However, the mere experience is enough to leave some victims with emotional trauma, injuries and property damage.

With the number of commercial vehicle collisions increasing, you may find yourself wondering what you can do to lower your chances of being involved in one. Here are some suggestions on how you can share the road with commercial vehicle operators to avoid collisions with them.

Avoid blind spots

Large trucks and commercial vehicles have multiple blind spots where the operators cannot see. Even when they adjust their mirrors properly, these areas exist. You should be mindful when you drive on the side and back of large vehicles. If you cannot see yourself in their side view mirrors, chances are the truckers cannot see you, either.

If you must drive beside a large commercial truck, try to get over to another lane as soon as it safe for you to do so. If traveling directly behind an oversized truck, make sure there is enough space between your car and the other vehicle so you both can brake safely.

Do not cut off truckers

Big rigs are much larger and heavier than passenger vehicles and take longer to stop. They cannot make sudden stops to avoid collisions with motorists who cut them off. If you need to maneuver your vehicle while near a large truck, make sure you use your turn signals and give truckers time to see and adjust their driving behavior.

It is important for you to extend the same courtesies you give to regular motorists to truck operators. Do not let the sheer size of their vehicles intimidate you. Continue to drive defensively and with caution around trucks. By making the roads a more predictable environment for all motorists, you can help reduce the chances of an accident.
