How to spot a distracted driver in North Carolina

Distracted driving has become a major problem, not only in North Carolina, but across the country. This epidemic really began to take off when cellphones were introduced to the world. Now people are connected to other people every minute of the day and can't seem to put the phone down when behind the wheel. Here are some tips for spotting a distracted driver.

One of the most common signs of distracted driving is that the vehicle near you continually swerves to the left or right of center. The double yellow lines or the white lines that divide lanes make it easy to spot distracted drivers. If a vehicle in front of you continually swerves, it's a good bet that the driver is not paying attention to the road in front of him or her.

If a driver takes too long to begin moving after a red light turns green, there's a strong possibility that the driver is distracted. If the car does not begin to move after a couple seconds past the light changing green, the driver is likely not looking at the light in front of him or her.

Sudden braking by the driver of any vehicle is another common sign of a distracted driver in North Carolina. Drivers who pay attention when behind the wheel will not have trouble stopping their vehicles when other traffic in front of them stops or they approach a red light or stop sign.

If you pull up alongside another vehicle and notice the driver has headphones in his or her ears, the driver is without a doubt distracted. Anyone who uses headphones while driving will be distracted from the noise around him or her, including emergency vehicle sirens. It's best to keep your distance from this driver because he or she will likely not hear your horn.
