Speed is believed to have caused serious rollover crash

Wilson Police Department officials arrested and charged a Bailey, North Carolina, man with felonious assault with a deadly weapon among other crimes on Monday, July 24. He's alleged to have been speeding at the time he struck a Virginia Beach family's minivan as they were driving through the county. The impact of the crash caused the van to roll over onto its roof, trapping the driver's wife and her son inside.

The 31-year-old man was believed to have speeding when he struck the family's Dodge Caravan just before 10:00 p.m. While the 51-year-old driver of the minivan was able to escape the wreckage after the van flipped, his wife and son were not.

First responders arriving at the crash scene worked tirelessly to free the two. Once extricated from the wreckage, the man's wife was transported to Greenville's Vidant Medical Center suffering from undisclosed serious injuries. The man's son as transported to Wilson Medical Center with minor ones.

In investigating the accident, police determined that the driver who struck the family's van had been speeding. That's when officers arrested him for both speeding and assault with a deadly weapon resulting in serious injury charges. He was transported to the Wilson County Jail where a $5,000 secured bond was imposed.

After further investigating the crash, officers also charged the man with misdemeanor marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession, displaying a fake or modified license plate, title, or registration card and reckless driving with wanton disregard.

If you are injured in a crash that was the fault of another driver, you should determine what your options are for seeking compensation for medical treatment and other damages via a civil claim. A North Carolina attorney can provide advice.
