How motorcyclists can avoid accidents

Many people who ride motorcycles in North Carolina do it because they love the joy and excitement they feel. They may not think about how that love of fun may put them at a higher risk of being hurt. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, people who drive in cars are 29 times less likely to crash and get hurt than motorcyclists are.

Motorcycles are one of the most hazardous methods of transportation. However, it is possible for riders to stay safe and avoid crashes by utilizing the following the tips.

Receive proper riding instruction

Some people learn how to ride and operate their vehicles from friends and family members, but they should also enroll in approved riding instruction courses to learn about riding techniques and safety. New riders should enroll so they learn proper riding habits the first time, and experienced riders should enroll to refresh their skills.

Wear safety gear

Many riders find it tempting to ride without wearing helmets or safety clothing. They may feel uncomfortable about how they look and feel, and they may not believe in their effectiveness to protect their bodies in motorcycle accidents. Riders must wear helmets to keep from breaking the law. However, some bikers do not always wear them.

Unlike cars, there are no structures to provide a buffer between a motorcyclist’s body and the ground or other vehicles. When bikers fall or become projectiles after crashing, they are at risk of breaking their bones, suffering from serious road abrasions and sustaining brain injuries and even death. Safety gear and proper riding techniques do not always prevent motorcycle accidents, but they do reduce the chances of them occurring and lower the risk of serious and life-threatening injuries.

Avoid adverse riding conditions

Poor road and weather conditions are more likely to impact biker safety than motorists. Bikers should plan their commutes so they can avoid hazards like construction, detours, slick roads and other issues that can decrease their safety on the streets. They should also check the weather so they are not riding when the roads are too slippery.

Motorcyclists should approach every ride like it is their first. This means wearing proper safety gear and their helmets, and adhering to all traffic rules. They should also stay up-to-date on their riding skills to improve their chances of staying accident and injury-free.
