Man arrested after high-speed chase

Recidivism (the propensity for those convicted of crimes to be charged with another crime) is a continuing problem in North Carolina. Part of this issue can be attributed to the presence of outstanding warrants on a person's record. An accused may be afraid of being questioned by police (during a routine traffic stop, for example) out of fear that warrants will be discovered and will result in an arrest.

This was likely the scenario that sparked a high-speed chase along Interstate 77 in Iredell County.

According to sheriff's deputies, a car was spotted travelling at a high rate of speed. They ostensibly tried to stop the car, but the deputies reported that car continued on. Authorities say that the car, eventually found to be driven by a man from Charlotte, reached speeds of 119 miles per hour on the highway.

Sheriff's deputies were eventually able to stop the car by using stop sticks.

The man was found to have outstanding warrants on drug and assault charges in Mecklenburg County.

The story is important to us because it serves as a reminder that people who believe they have outstanding warrants may do additional things to avoid being arrested that may actually harm their futures. If you believe you have a warrant for your arrest issued, speaking with an experienced criminal defense attorney is in your best interests. A lawyer can explain what you are facing regarding potential criminal sanctions, and can explain your rights and options so that you can make informed decisions about your future.
