Driving safe in North Carolina during the holidays

With gas prices falling, it is expected that a higher number of people will take to roads and highways across North Carolina for the Christmas holiday. In fact, the American Automobile Association (AAA) estimates that a record number of Americans will travel at least 50 miles to a destination for the holiday. It is also believed that 90 percent of people travelling that distance will do so by car.

The convergence of crowded roads along with the potential for bad weather makes for an unsavory combination. Because of this, we offer a few helpful tips so that our readers will be ready for erratic drivers as well as the elements.

Allow yourself time – When road conditions become difficult (either due to ice, rain or even snow), drivers must reduce their speed in order to avoid the accidents that can come with hydroplaning, sliding into medians (or other cars) due to icy roads, or spinning out on snow covered roads. Just like the old adage, slow and steady wins the race.

Put social media aside – Despite the public backlash against distracted driving, a number of people still use cell phones while driving. Some even take “selfies” and post them on Facebook and Instagram. During the holiday season (and throughout the winter) staying away from social media is a key component in staying safe.

Keep an emergency kit – In case you are stranded, it is always a good idea to keep an emergency kit in your car. Common items include jumper cables, a flashlight, flares, a blanket and a bit of non-perishable food.
