2 North Carolina men seriously injured in motorcycle accident

With the arrival of warmer weather and sunnier days comes the appearance of more motorcycles on America's roadways. Motorcycles don't take up much room on roads, and some drivers tend to take their presence for granted or even overlook them. Occasionally, even other cyclists can be responsible for motorcycle accidents, as was the case in Iowa last Sunday when two motorcyclists from North Carolina crashed into one another.

According to the report in Omaha.com, both of the men were from Asheboro, North Carolina, although it is unclear whether the two men were traveling together. The motorcycle collision occurred on Interstate 29 near the Pottawattamie County and Harrison County line at approximately 11:40 a.m. on Sunday. A 69 year-old victim suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Nebraska Medical Center. The other victim is 57 years old and was transported to the medical center by ambulance.

Police reports indicate the 57 year-old may have lost control of his motorcycle due to strong winds. When his motorcycle went down, the 69 year-old cyclist was unable to avoid the other man and rolled his own motorcycle. According to the Council Bluffs airport, winds were blowing from the east at about 23 mph with gusts approaching 31 mph around the time of the motorcycle accident.

Spring and summer is a time for enjoying the outdoors and cruising America's roads, but drivers and cyclists need to be aware of any weather conditions that might occur spontaneously. Wind can be a big factor in reducing the safety of highway travel, particularly for motorcycles and large trucks. If we all work together to make the roads safer, we can reduce the amount of motorcycle accidents in our country, as well as the need for lawsuits against those who might cause these crashes.
