Pregnant women more likely to be involved in car wrecks

Expecting a child is a joyous event for more women. While these women have a lot on their mind as they look towards the future, a recent study suggests that they may want to drive more carefully during this time, as they are more likely to have an accident when expecting.

According to a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the risk of being in a car accident increases in the second trimester. This is when many women are feeling the effects of being pregnant but may not drive as carefully as in the third trimester.

One of the authors of the study said, "A normal pregnancy is associated with fatigue, nausea, insomnia, anxiety and distraction. All those changes could contribute to driver error."

The study took into account records of 500,000 women who gave birth. These women were tracked for four years before becoming pregnant as well as one year after giving birth.

The number of serious car wrecks before birth, noted as those that landed the woman in an emergency room for treatment, was 177 per month. By the fourth month of pregnancy, this number increased to 299 incidents per month. By the last month of pregnancy, the number went back down.

This study may not be all-inclusive, but it does show that the stage of pregnancy can have an impact on how women drive. During the second trimester, the chance of being involved in a car accident is much greater than other times before, during and after pregnancy.
