Can I sue for scars I received in a drunk driving car wreck?

There are several things you should know if you have been injured in a car accident caused by a drunk driver in North Carolina. Our state takes a dim view towards operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol. In addition to criminal prosecution, drunk drivers can also be held liable in civil court for the injuries that they may have caused to others.

For example, injured victims are allowed to seek compensation for their pain and suffering in certain cases. Typically, a jury will decide the amount of mental or physical distress the car wreck has caused the victim. Several factors can be considered in that calculation, including scarring and disfigurement brought on as a result of the accident. A jury may decide that a badly scarred plaintiff may experience a general loss of his or her enjoyment of life as long as he or she remains alive. He or she may also consider whether that scarring may extend to any future diminishment of the plaintiff's employment opportunities. Imagine a television personality horribly disfigured in an alcohol-related car wreck. That victim's future earning potential may has been considerably reduced as a result of the accident.

Victims of drunk drivers in North Carolina do not have to suffer quietly with permanent, life-altering effects of preventable car accidents. Although no outcome can be guaranteed, your personal injury attorney will be able to assess the particulars of your case and determine whether your claim for pain and suffering has merit.

It is also important to note that any victim harmed through the negligent actions of others are entitled to sue for compensation related to his or her medical costs and wages lost as a result of missing work.
