Car wrecks and underage drinking stats

Anybody who is under the influence of alcohol -- regardless of his or her age or location -- is at a greater risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident. Not only can the person injure or kill him or herself, but he or she could involve innocent victims as well.

According to statistics compiled by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, underage drinking continues to be a major problem throughout the United States.

Here are some stats that are sure to open your eyes:

-- Car accidents remain the leading cause of death among teenagers. Furthermore, roughly 25 percent of these accidents include an underage driver who was drinking.

-- One out of every six teenagers takes part in binge drinking, but only one out of every 100 parents believes their teenager is involved with such activity.

-- Children who begin drinking at a young age are seven times more likely to be involved in some type of alcohol-related accident.

In addition to the three statistics above, this one may be the most telling:

"Teen alcohol use kills 4,700 people each year - that's more than all illegal drugs combined."

This statistic shows that teen alcohol use is extremely serious, as it kills nearly 5,000 people every year.

Nobody should ever drink and drive, as the risk outweighs any perceived reward. In the most serious of circumstances, drinking and driving can result in an accident that kills somebody.

There is no way of knowing if somebody around you on the road is drunk. If you are injured in such an accident, you may have legal rights that you are not yet aware of.
