Who is at risk for impaired driving car accidents?

It is easy for our North Carolina readers to understand that driving under the influence will increase the chance of being involved in a car accident. Even though everybody is at risk of being involved in a drunk driving accident, some groups have a higher risk than others.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pinpointed the following groups as having the highest risk of incident:

-- Drivers who were previously convicted of driving under the influence. Here is a telling passage from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

"Drivers with a BAC of 0.08% or higher involved in fatal crashes were seven times more likely to have a prior conviction for DWI than were drivers with no alcohol in their system."

-- Regardless of the level of blood alcohol concentration, younger people have a greater risk of being part of an accident than older people.

-- Motorcyclists. Of the motorcyclists killed in an accident in 2012, 29 percent had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or higher.

Even if you never let a sip of alcohol touch your lips, there is a chance you could be involved in a drunk driving accident. There is no way of knowing if another driver is under the influence and unable to make sound decisions.

The best thing you can do from a personal point of view is to avoid drinking and driving. Along with this, pay close attention to those around you. If you are still involved in a drunk driving accident, you may want to talk to an attorney about your legal rights.
