With so many people on the road at every time of the day, there is always the chance that one or more is operating their vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Here is an excerpt from Mothers Against Drunk Driving that shows just how frequent this has become: "Americans take 233 billion trips in cars each year. Of those, about one out of every two thousand trips are taken by those who are driving under the influence of alcohol. Yet, almost one out of every three traffic deaths involve drunk driving."
As you can see, there are more people driving sober than drunk. However, there are quite a few people who are taking to the road after having too much to drink.
Adding to the above data from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the organization also noted that a person is killed in a drunk driving accident approximately every 53 minutes. Furthermore, a person is injured in such an accident approximately every two minutes.
It doesn't matter if a person is drinking and driving for the first time or has done so dozens of times in the past, they are increasing the chance of causing an accident.
There are many causes of car accidents in the United States. Distracted driving causes many deaths and injuries every year. The same holds true for reckless driving. As noted above, drunk driving is every bit as dangerous.
As a driver yourself, it is important to realize the risks associated with drinking and driving. Knowing that others around you could be drunk will change your approach. If you are injured in a drunk driving crash, know that you could be able seek compensation.
