Common signs of a drunk driver

No matter how many laws are in place, there will always be people who drink and drive. Some people know they are drunk when they get behind the wheel. Others don't understand that they had too much to drink.

As a sober driver, you should understand the process of spotting a drunk driver. This can go a long way in keeping you and other drivers safe.

No two drunk drivers are the same in terms of how they act, but here are several signs of a person who has had too much to drink:

-- Following others too closely.

-- Quick deceleration and acceleration.

-- Drifting from one lane to another.

-- Almost hitting another object, such as a vehicle or curb.

-- Weaving in and out of traffic.

-- Failing to make timely decisions, such as accelerating once a traffic light turns green.

-- Driving with headlights off during nighttime hours.

-- Erratic braking.

-- Driving on the wrong side of the road.

If you believe a person is driving drunk, keep your distance. Don't try to take action on your own. Instead, contact the authorities to explain what you are seeing. At that time, you can also give a description of the vehicle.

Understanding the common signs of a drunk driver could save that person, as well as others, from being involved in a potentially fatal accident.

Drunk driving will always be an issue, which means there is no way to completely eliminate these types of accidents. If a person spots a drunk driver, he or she can take action toward getting him or her off the road as soon as possible.
