The initial treatment for a traumatic brain injury

If a person suffers a brain injury, such as in a motor vehicle accident, it is imperative that he or she receives the best medical treatment available. This gives the person a good chance of surviving the injury and moving on without any ill effects.

The initial treatment following a traumatic brain injury depends on many factors, including the severity. Upon arriving at the hospital, the medical team will examine the patient to determine the extent of the injury and the type of treatment to implement.

Note: While not always the case, there are times when surgery is necessary.

Once the patient is stabilized and a treatment plan is in place, the patient is transferred to a specialized unit for additional care. During this time, a critical care team will ensure the well being of the patient. They are responsible for monitoring the patient's progress, notifying doctors of any changes, and checking for signs of pain and infection.

A psychologist is often called in shortly after the accident to assess the patient and help him or her, as well as their family, make important decisions. This person is also responsible for explaining the injury and its effect.

The initial treatment for a traumatic brain injury is not the same for every person in this position. What doesn't change, however, is the importance of the appropriate type of treatment.

When a person injures his or her brain, there is nothing more important than getting the right treatment. Once he or she is stabilized, other details can then be taken care of.
