Mark calendars: May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

While it should surely be a year-round goal, the month of May is designated as "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month."

Motorists are asked to "share the road" safely with motorcyclists and pay extra attention to keep riders and their passengers safe. Also, motorcyclists should make additional efforts to increase their visibility to other motorists.

Staying sober while riding is vital as well. Data from research indicates a much higher percentage of impaired motorcyclists in fatal collisions that exceeds the percentage of impaired drivers on the highways. To combat this problem, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is involved in multiple campaigns aimed at keeping motorcycle riders sober and safe.

In 2012, 4,957 motorcycle riders were killed in accidents, a 7 percent uptick from the prior year. But there is no need to become a statistic. Riders must do all that they can to remain safe on their two-wheelers, including always wearing helmets and brightly colored riding gear. Never drink or use drugs and ride and make sure that your cycle is in tip-top condition by performing regular routine maintenance tasks. Although loud pipes are often disparaged by those who don't ride motorcycles, they do ensure that motorcyclists are heard as they approach on the highways.

But motorists also have to step up their own awareness of motorcyclists. Looking twice at intersections and when entering roadways from parking lots and driveways saves lives. Simply being aware of the presence of these riders helps keep them safer.

If you suffer injuries in a motorcycle wreck, you may want to consider all of the legal options available to you when filing a claim.
