Buckle up in the back seat, too

Last month, the Governors Highway Safety Association issued a press release announcing their partnership with the ride-sharing company, Uber, to raise awareness of the need for back seat use of seat belts.

Their efforts are a response to the uptick in traffic fatalities all over the United States, which could total as much as 10 percent more than last year's figures. In almost half of the deaths in collisions, the deceased were not belted in. Back seat passengers were as much as 15 percent less likely to use safety restraints.

According to the GHSA, in a single year, almost 900 back-seat riders didn't buckle up and died in accidents. It's estimated that nearly half of those passengers would be alive today if they had been securely belted.

The woman who heads Uber's Public Policy for Safety, Privacy and Security stated, "Millions of rides happen daily on Uber, and . . . we're thrilled to participate in the Click It or Ticket campaign to encourage drivers and riders to buckle up - every seat, every time."

It's common for those who wouldn't think of riding unrestrained in their own vehicle to think nothing of ignoring seat belt laws when riding in commercial vehicles for-hire. Keep in mind that these vehicles are as susceptible to being involved in accidents as consumers' personal cars, and it is always better to be safe than sorry.

If you wind up injured in a collision this summer, whether or not you were in your own vehicle, you may decide to file a claim for damages with the at-fault driver's insurance company.
