2 die in motorcycle wreck with car

Summer is a great time to get out on the open road on your motorcycle, perhaps with a passenger behind you, enjoying the wind in your face and the heat of the sun on your back.

Yet motorcycle enthusiasts always realize that the ride they are on could potentially be the last one they will ever get to enjoy, as motorcycle riding is an inherently dangerous pastime. Moreover, the fate of riders and their passengers does not always lie in their own skills and caution, as they are only as safe as the other drivers on the roads with them are.

For one Fayetteville couple, their last ride took place in the early morning hours of June 26. The media reported that a man and woman, both 43, died at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday as they traveled eastward on Elk Road in Hope Mills.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol were alerted to an accident involving the motorcycle and a car driven by a 50-year-old man who was headed west on Elk Road. For unknown reasons, his vehicle crossed over the center lane and struck the motorcyclists head-on.

According to reports from WRAL, the driver suffered only minor injuries in the crash. He is expected to face charges in the double fatality.

Even at low speeds, a head-on collision with a motorcycle is likely to cause catastrophic injuries or death to the rider. When impaired, distracted or otherwise negligent drivers cause deadly of life-altering accidents, they should be held accountable. The criminal justice system can't address the economic devastation in the aftermath of a collision, which is why civil justice through the North Carolina courts remains an option to pursue.
