3-vehicle wreck on I-85 claims 2 lives

Lexington, North Carolina, was the scene of a recent highway tragedy when a three-vehicle collision resulted in the deaths of two people. Their identities were not released by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, although reports indicate that a paramedic from Davidson County was among the injured.

The crash occurred on Thursday, July 28, at approximately 10:15 p.m. around Mile Marker 91 on Interstate 85 South. First responders included Davidson County emergency personnel and Lexington firefighters.

Troopers allege that the driver of an older model Toyota sped southbound on the interstate, driving erratically and switching lanes. It careened into a 2008 Toyota minivan, swung left and plowed into a 2006 Ford pickup truck.

After the impact with the pickup, the first vehicle veered off the right side of the highway, hit a tree and burst into flames, authorities reported. The state police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the double highway fatality.

There is no denying that driving at night is inherently more dangerous than daytime driving. Collision fatality rates triple at night, research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found. Even though only 25 percent of driving is done after dark, over 50 percent of all auto collision deaths occur then.

There are many reasons for this dangerous uptick of deaths on the highway, and one of those is driver impairment. Drinking or taking drugs can cause otherwise safe drivers to engage in deadly driving behaviors that put them and all who share the roads with them in grave danger.

If you are injured in a wreck with an impaired or at-fault driver, you can learn which options are available for you to pursue compensation.
