Investigators looking into Black Mountain crash

A track and field coach from Montreat College suffered a paralyzing injury in a motor vehicle accident last Friday. Now, authorities are scrambling to find out what happened. They have even filed a warrant in Buncombe County to search the vehicle that struck the man.

The accident happened when the coach's vehicle -- a 2004 Mazda -- was struck by a speeding 2015 Nissan in Black Mountain. According to police, the speeding driver failed to stop and avoid the collision.

Now, investigators want to search the Nissan's crash information recorder, which will tell them how fast it was traveling before the collision. It will also give rollover information, seat belt usage, brake usage, how many people were in the car, throttle usage and airbag deployment.

What we know so far is that the rear-striking driver was speeding down I-40. Then he lost control, and hit a guard rail after getting off the interstate. He continued down U.S. 70, where he was also speeding and crossed the left center lane. It wasn't long after getting off U.S. 70 that he drove into the back of the coach's vehicle.

Although the coach is paralyzed, and will never walk again the outpouring of support for the man will hopefully bring some beauty to his situation. The community, including Montreat College and other local colleges, have banded together to raise money and show their support for him. North Henderson, which hosted a track meet last Tuesday, turned the event into a fundraiser for the much-loved coach.

Victims of car accidents caused by negligent and unlawful drivers in North Carolina will have the ability to pursue financial restitution from the parties at fault for their injuries. A successfully navigated personal injury lawsuit, for example, can bring money to pay for medical care, compensation for disabilities and other categories of compensatory damages.
