The dangers of non-mobile phone distracted driving

Many people have started to think that distracted driving only occurs when a driver is using a mobile phone while behind the wheel. This cannot be further from the truth. Distracted driving happens all the time and for various reasons. These reasons will be discussed today as we take a look at non-mobile phone distracted driving in North Carolina.

Prior to mobile phones, drivers were routinely distracted by changing the radio stations, tapes and CDs in their cars while driving. Even though these are tasks that typically take just seconds to perform, a driver can easily lose track of the road and what is ahead of them. This is still a distraction today, especially since there are more options including satellite radio.

Another common non-mobile phone distraction is talking with passengers while driving. Now, we understand that it is not only rude to ignore your passengers, but also very difficult to remain quiet. With that being said, a heated argument or in-depth discussion can lead to distracted driving. You could become so enthralled with your discussion that you miss a turn, begin to speed or even change lanes without realizing it.

Having screaming children in the car while driving is another non-mobile phone distraction. Screaming children can cause you to lose concentration on the road and of your whereabouts. Having to then discipline or interact with your children while driving can lead to very serious accidents.

Non-mobile phone distracted driving also includes the following activities:

- Eating, drinking or snacking

- Reading a newspaper or magazine

- Searching the glove box or center console

- Daydreaming

- Stressing about work, school or life in general

- Focusing on other cars around you instead of driving

- Shaving or applying makeup

- Getting dressed or changing clothes
