How to spot the signs of a drunk driver in North Carolina

Drunk driving is a big problem on the roads of North Carolina. Even with law enforcement agencies running various programs the issue still remains. Because of this, it's important to know how to spot the signs of a drunk driver. Here are some of the most common signs so you can familiarize yourself with what a drunk driver looks like.

If you spot any of the following signs from another driver, he or she could be under the influence:

- Signaling that is not consistent with driving actions

- Random acceleration or deceleration

- Tailgating

- Coming close to striking another vehicle, the curb or an object

- Weaving across the road

- Driving at night without headlights

- Swerving

- Driving anywhere but on a surface designated for vehicles

- Drifting in and out of traffic

- Erratic braking or stopping without a reason

- Slow response to traffic signals, such as delayed start or late stop

- Driving slower than 10 MPH under the posted speed limit

- Turning illegally or abruptly

- Driving into oncoming traffic

- Straddling the center lines

Should you come across a driver exhibiting any of these signs, it's imperative that you stay as far away from the vehicle as possible for your own safety. Without compromising your safety, attempt to note the license plate and a description of the vehicle. You can then provide the information to a 911 dispatcher. Make sure you also note the location of the vehicle, including the name of the road and if possible, the closest mile marker.

Never try to pass a vehicle that appears to be driven by a drunk driver. Also, never try to get the vehicle to pull off the side of the road.
