You need to make smart decisions after a car crash

A car crash happens unexpectedly; it is a jarring, sometimes devastating experience. In trying to pull yourself together afterward, you are probably not going to be thinking clearly. However, the decisions you make following the accident are going to have significance in the weeks and months ahead.

Remember that the medical help you seek, the notes you take at the crash site and the things you say about the accident will affect any legal case you might have or insurance claim you might submit.

Seek immediate medical attention

After a vehicle crash, check yourself for injuries, then check the condition of other people who were in the accident and call 911. Even if you feel all right or only have minor injuries, seek medical help immediately. For one thing, some symptoms do not show up right away, and for another, getting timely medical attention will strengthen any personal injury claim you might have. Keep bills and receipts for medications you need or special equipment, like a cane or walker.

Contact the police and take notes

While you wait for the police to arrive, take notes about the crash. Write down the license number and vehicle identification number of the other car or cars involved. Record the names and contact information for any witnesses. Describe the crash location, weather, and the direction each car was heading when the accident occurred. Use your mobile phone to take photos of vehicle damage from different angles. Include site markers like traffic lights or highway signs.

Do not admit fault

Even if you feel you were to blame for the accident, do not admit fault to anyone. Instead, get a copy of the police report. Share this with your attorney. Remember that the insurance companies will see the police report, too. If you are looking to receive compensation, the insurance company lawyers may offer a lowball figure or deny your claim altogether. This is where an experienced personal injury attorney can step in, use the medical and crash site information you gathered, litigate your claim if necessary and help you get the full compensation to which you are entitled.
