Tips for driving safely near motorcycles

The fall season is one of the most popular for motorcyclists in North Carolina. The weather is still cooperating and the fall foliage is definitely something to look at when traveling. This means that car drivers will have more to contend with when commuting to work, school or simply out for a drive. Here are some important tips for driving safely near motorcycles.

Motorists should follow the three-second rule when on the road, which relates to driving distance between your car and the one in front of you. You should increase this to a four-second rule when following a motorcycle. The extra cushion gives you more time to stop should the motorcycle crash or stop unexpectedly.

You should look at least twice, sometimes three times before turning left. A large number of fatal motorcycle accidents occur because of vehicles turning left in front of a motorcycle. If you approach an intersection and see a motorcycle, attempt to make eye contact with the rider before making a turn.

Motorists should always check their blind spots for other vehicles, but you should do it more often when you know there is a motorcycle in your vicinity. The motorcycle can easily get lost in the blind spot of a car, pickup truck or SUV.

If you are driving in inclement weather and notice a motorcycle that got caught in it, give the rider as much space as possible. They will likely have trouble navigating the weather.

Are you unsure about what to do following a car accident? An experienced personal injury attorney can help you learn more about the options in your case so you can move forward with your legal case in Wilson.
