An alleged drunk driver hits a tree in Benson, kills passenger

A 33-year-old Wilson, North Carolina, woman lost her life early in the morning on Friday, Dec. 8, when the driver of the van she was traveling in lost control of it, crashing it into a large oak tree.

The fatal car crash happened just outside of Benson in the southern portion of Johnston County, North Carolina. It was reported at around 5:30 a.m., by a passing motorist, although residents in the area reported hearing a thunderous bang as early as midnight. It's believed the crash could have originally happened then.

In reconstructing the crash, North Carolina Highway Patrol officers were able to determine that the man had apparently been traveling northbound along Meadowbrook Road immediately before he lost control of his van. It's apparently as he was about to reach a bend in the road where West Johnson Road intersects with Meadowbrook that the man crossed over the roadway's center line and into oncoming traffic.

Fortunately, it doesn't appear that there were any motorist driving southbound at the time that he came into contact with. At the point at which the man lost control of his vehicle, however, there's a sharp curve. Police believe that he ran off the road at that bend, then traveled some distance across a nearby yard before it ultimately colliding with the tree.

The man's female passenger is believed to have died instantly from the impact of the crash. As for the driver of the van, he was transported to Raleigh's Wake Medical Center with unspecified injuries. It's unclear what his prognosis is.

What is clear, however, is the fact that law enforcement has reason to believe that he may have been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. If state police officers are successful in confirming that he was intoxicated at the time, then they will likely press criminal charges against him once he's released from the hospital.

Drunk driving accidents claim far too many people's lives in the United States every year. If a drunk driver was responsible for the death of your loved one, then a Wilson, North Carolina, personal injury attorney can advise you of the legal options available in your case.
