3 common causes of semi-truck accidents

Car accidents of any kind can cause serious injuries and even death. When those accidents involve semi-trucks, it is even more likely that the consequences will be severe. Why are there so many accidents involving 18-wheelers? It seems as though these vehicles are even more likely to be in auto wrecks than other vehicles. There are a few reasons that may explain this phenomenon.

The following are three common causes of semi-truck accidents. If you have recently been in an accident with an 18-wheeler, consider whether any of these scenarios apply. More importantly, however, be sure to seek out the medical care and legal representation you need after the accident.

1. Unsafe driving

Unfortunately, one of the most common causes of accidents involving trucks is simply driver negligence. Truck drivers are often made to work very long hours, which puts them at risk of becoming drowsy, and this can put every other driver on the road at risk. Lawmakers have tried to address this problem with varying degrees of success, but it persists as one of the biggest dangers when semi-trucks are on the road.

2. Mechanical error

Driver error is not the only factor that can cause accidents involving semi-trucks. Trucks are complex vehicles that sometimes break down and require maintenance, but if repairs are not made correctly, mechanical errors can cause accidents, too. Improperly secured cargo can cause weight to be unevenly distributed and lead to a tire blowout. Brake failure, too, is a potential cause of accidents.

3. Road conditions

Sometimes, road conditions make it unsafe for any vehicle to drive. If it is pouring down rain, you might hydroplane, and the size of a semi-truck makes this potential even more dangerous. Snow, hail and ice are even more treacherous. The weight and length of an 18-wheeler make it difficult to stop quickly, so inclement weather and road conditions can create a recipe for disaster.
