Do you have to wear a helmet on a motorcycle in North Carolina?

You have never enjoyed wearing a helmet on a motorcycle. Before moving to North Carolina, you lived in a state where helmets were optional. You usually opted not to wear it and never had a problem, so now you're wondering if you can make the same decision in North Carolina.

You cannot. The state requires that riders and passengers wear helmets at all times.

Attempts have been made to change this law. The latest one was just last year, in 2017. It would have still required young and inexperienced riders to wear helmets, but many older riders could have decided for themselves if they wanted them or not.

The bill never made it into law. Those behind it knew they could not get all of the support they wanted, so they pulled it down before the vote.

Now, there is another question to ask here, and that's whether or not you should want to ride without a helmet. Over 1,800 lives were saved by helmets in 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC also says that your risk of being killed drops by 37 percent with a helmet on, while the risk of a serious head injury falls by 69 percent.

Remember, you cannot control other drivers. Their mistakes put you in danger. When a crash happens and you can't avoid it, having all of the safety gear you can helps to lower the odds of life-changing injuries.

With or without a helmet, if you get hurt in a motorcycle crash caused by another driver, make sure you understand all of your legal options.
