3 tips for becoming a confident driver after a crash

You get in a car accident, and your confidence plummets. Every time you get in the car after that, you start to feel very nervous -- and that's just when you're a passenger. You cannot force yourself to drive. It's too overwhelming, and you keep worrying about getting in another wreck.

Here are three tips that can help:

  1. Take a class. Work with an instructor to learn more about driving. Practicing with a professional can rebuild your confidence. It also makes you face the very thing that brings on your nervousness. You can overcome it.
  2. Talk about it. Open up to a friend or family member. Things often seem far worse in your head than they are in real life. In fact, talking about it forces you to say it out loud, and that alone can help you move past it. Do not keep it to yourself. Talk to someone whom you trust.
  3. Start small and remember that it's a process. Try just taking a quick trip around the block. Then build up to a trip across town. When you start to get more comfortable, you can consider going back near the accident site. Starting small means you only have to face your fear for a few minutes and you can slowly work at it until you do not feel anxious anymore. Your confidence will have returned.

Accidents can be mentally traumatic, so potential issues extend far beyond physical injuries. Make sure you understand all of the legal rights you have to seek compensation for both types of complications from a car crash.
