5 different types of serious head injuries

Even with airbags and seat belts, you could suffer some serious head injuries in a motor vehicle accident. It is important to understand exactly what these injuries look like, what treatment is needed and what prospects you have for a full recovery.

Here are five different types of head injuries:

  1. Diffuse axonal injury: This type of injury directly harms the brain cells themselves. Though it usually does not result in any bleeding, it can cause swelling.

  2. Skull fracture: The skull is meant to protect your brain and it is incredibly tough, but a hard impact can cause fractures, just as it would with any other bone. The risk here is greater, though, since the brain could be harmed when the skull breaks.

  3. Concussion: When your brain moves inside your skull, it can result in bruising and it may lead to a concussion. This is often a closed-head injury, so you may not see any external symptoms even when you can feel the internal symptoms clearly.

  4. Hemorrhage: This is bleeding within the skull. An intracerebral hemorrhage happens inside the brain itself, while a subarachnoid hemorrhage happens between the brain and the skull.

  5. Edema: This is when the brain begins to swell. With no room to expand, the pressure gets incredibly great if the swelling continues unchecked. This can lead to both physical and mental symptoms. The worst cases can even be fatal if nothing is done in time.

Have you suffered a head injury in a crash caused by another driver? If so, make sure you know what steps to take to seek financial compensation for your medical bills.
