Beware the dangers of aftermarket motorcycle modifications

One perk of owning a motorcycle is the freedom to modify your vehicle with aftermarket parts. Many motorcyclists in Wilson and across the country enjoy customizing their bikes. However, there is a downside to aftermarket motorcycle modifications that you may not know about.

Motorcycle accidents do not always occur due to negligent drivers and hazardous road and weather conditions. Some incidents are the result of unsafe vehicle modifications. Before you add new features and aftermarket parts to your motorcycle, consider the following information:

Changing the handlebars weights

Motorcycles are equipped with handlebar weights. Many bikers tend to replace them with more attractive weights and apparatuses, not realizing that they are compromising their safety. Not all aftermarket handlebar weights are equal. If you are thinking about replacing the OEM weights on your handlebars, make sure that they are an exact match to the original handlebars you are replacing. The wrong weights and apparatuses can increase the amount of engine vibrations riders experience while riding and provide less cushioning in the event of a fall, motor vehicle collision or motorcycle accident

Using poor quality handlebar grips

The grips on motorcycles do not last long. Many riders replace them with aftermarket grips so they can continue riding. It is important for riders to choose the best riding grips when making improvements and repairs to their bikes. Many aftermarket grips are not built to OEM specifications and do not offer the proper amount of support, grip and stability. Good quality OEM handlebar grips may be more expensive, but the investment is well worth it. They help riders to maintain control of their motorcycles and maneuver through tricky situations with fewer complications.

There are many aftermarket parts you can outfit your bike with. Be sure to choose equipment that matches the manufacturer’s guidelines for your vehicle. Also, any customizations you make should enhance your motorcycle’s safety, not diminish it. There is nothing wrong with wanting your ride to look more stylish, but do not sacrifice your safety. Always consider if your modifications will help or compromise you in the event of hazardous road and riding conditions and motor vehicle collisions.
