Most common car accidents in parking lots

Parking lots may seem safe, but anyone can lose control even in such a confined space. One Raleigh man recently drove 70 mph through a parking lot and careened into a river where he tragically lost his life. No one else sustained injuries, but in a parking lot, you never know what other cars or pedestrians may do.

Parking lot accidents happen all the time, and they can result in substantial injuries. You can sustain significant whiplash or suffer a concussion even though neither vehicle traveled that fast. You need to remain vigilant even if you think it is safe, so you can avoid the most common collisions that occur in lots.

Rear-end accident at a stop sign

A lot of people do not see the problem in looking at their phones or programming the GPS in a parking lot. Most cars travel less than 10 mph, so they do not see the harm in engaging in dangerous activities. However, this can lead to one car rear-ending another stopped at a stop sign or in the middle of the lane. For the most part, the driver that rear-ended the other car will hold all the liability because he or she should have paid attention.

Pull out into traffic without looking

Drivers trying to back out into a lane need to make sure it is safe to do so before going out all the way. Failure to do so can result in one car striking another, or worse, striking a pedestrian. The car pulling out will hold most of the liability unless the other car traveled too fast going down the lane.

Two drivers back up into each other

It is possible two drivers think it is safe to pull out, and they end up hitting each other. In this instance, both drivers would share liability. Neither one had the right of way, so they share the blame.
